The Abbey (formerly known as Abbey National) is the UK's leading mortgage company. Abbey will lose its name "Abbey" after a long history and shall be renamed as Santander after its new Spanish owner. Abbey will be joined by Alliance Leicester and Bradford & Bingley as part of the Santander.

Since 2004, Abbey has been part of the Santander Group, the third largest bank in the world by profit. With the acquisition of Alliance & Leicester and the transfer of the branch network and savings business of Bradford & Bingley in 2008.

Abbey and Alliance & Leicester has become the second biggest mortgage bank in the UK by claiming a 16.3% share of gross mortgage lending in the first half of 2009 behind the Halifax but ahead of the Nationwide.

With a fixed rate mortgage, repayments remain the same during the fixed rate period, no matter what happens to interest rates. So if our interest rates fall or rise your monthly payments will still stay the same during the fixed rate period.

With a base rate tracker mortgage your rate will automatically drop when the Bank of England base rate falls - so if the base rate goes up, your mortgage rate will also go up.
